West Valley, AZ - Frankly I find this news article frightening.
"Citing eminent-domain laws, an Arizona court has forced a landowner to continue renting space to Maricopa County even though the municipal government failed to agree to terms to extend the lease."
The county's lease expired and the landowner wanted to lease the property with a five year extension because they had another customer willing to do so. So the county forced the landowner to lease to them and basically said, 'You will lease this to us and it will be at our terms.'
Or as the vice president of development for Orsett/Columbia Ltd., Mike Freret, put it,
"This means municipalities can identify a space they want and force a landlord to lease it to them.... What the lower court said via these actions was that municipalities can create new contracts where none existed before."
That is governmental bullying and smacks of everything contrary to a free republic.
