Where's the Hatchet? - Noreen Gillespie of the A.P. has an interesting article found on Yahoo!®. News. There appears to be a group of people desiring to rewrite history to show that George Washington was the eleventh President of the United States of America and that Samuel Huntington was the original President.
Samuel who? You know that guy from Connecticut. He was the president of the Continental Congress in 1781 when the Articles of Confederation were established.
Who's behind this drive to dethrone Washington? The Norwich Historical Society of Norwich, Connecticut.
Gillespie writes:
Stanley Klos, a collector of historical documents and historical building renovator from Upper Saint Clair, Pa., has been making the case for Huntington's recognition without success for years.
....
On a Web site, www.uspresidency.com, he explains why he believes Huntington and nine other men who led the Congress before Washington's election in 1789 were considered presidents. Sometimes, it gets confusing.
So why don't we consider the ten men starting with Huntington Presidents of the U.S.A. if they were presidents of the Continental Congress? Gillespie gives one reason.
One reason may be because the Articles of Confederation failed....
Oh yeah. That might explain it. So it really wasn't officially the United States of America till after that? Hmm....
