Is this the Hypocritical Oath in Action? - A doctor working at Ste-Justine's Children's Hospital in Montreal, Canada since 1990 recently died. The doctor had HIV. And now the 2,614 children that she operated on are being tested for the Aids virus.
The hospital is saying that chances of infection are very minimal but non-the-less they feel the need to test the children to rule out any passage of the disease.
The Toronto Star has the full story and quotes Ste-Justine's executive director, Khiem Dao, saying:
"Even if the risk is extremely low, we believe that children's safety takes priority over all other considerations.
"We believe that contacting each patient suggesting they get tested for HIV will confirm without a doubt that there wasn't any contamination.
"This assurance is crucial for the affected children and adults. It is also for us."
Too bad it wasn't crucial enough to not let the doctor operate on the children in the first place. Granted we don't know if the hospital even knew she was ill with the horrible disease of Aids, but surely the doctor did and she should not have taken the risk of infecting the children on whom she operated.
