Parent Alert - Steve Jordahl, for Family News in Focus, has a report on a study from Harvard by Kimberly Thompson. The study looks at the Video Game Industries rating system, the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), and focused on the games rated for teen consumption.
Here's some stats that Jordahl repots:
The study, which only looked at T-rated games, found that 10 percent of games with sexual content and 10 percent of games with profanity were not correctly labeled. What's more, 42 percent of T-rated games contain bloody gore, but only 27 percent have that fact listed on the box.
Jordahl notes that the ESRB group welcomed the input and are always looking for ways to improve the ratings system.
Just a heads up for you parents out there that you need to continue to be vigilant in filtering what your kids consume. Having worked in the retail side of the video game industry I was often surprised by some of the stuff for sale. What's more, I don't think parents and people that don't play video games, understand exactly how addictive they really can be.
