The shedding of blood. - Northern Nigeria is in turmoil as Muslims wage war against Christians. Recently in the post, "Pregnant Women Ripped Open and then Burned," I noted some an example of horrors taking place in Nigeria.
Today, Lere Ojedokun and Francis Awowole-Browne reporting for AllAfrica.com, it is learned that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) estimates that the total lives lost in Kano region of northern Nigeria is at 3,000 lives.
AllAfrica.com reports:
The group, citing "information available" to it alleged that 30 churches and over 200 houses belonging to Christians have been destroyed while over 90 Christian students were killed at the Bayero University, Kano (BUK) and the Federal College of Education (FCE), Bichi.
Another six Christian lecturers from the institutions were also allegedly killed while claiming that so far, the total number of lives lost was 3,000
On the displaced persons' camps in Bompai and Bukabu, CAN said there were 15,000 people living there as refugees even as it maintained that in comparison to the crisis in Wase, Plateau State in April 2001 Christians suffered greatly.
The CIA World Factbook reports that Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa with a population of 134 million. There is a high mortality rate due to the ravaging disease of AIDS.
Nigeria is also an oil-rich country. Also, noted in the World Factbook is that the nation has been unstable in the past due to the unstable political situations and corruption. Likely the result of 16 years of military rule which supposedly came to an end in 1999 with a new constitution and a handover of the government to civilian control.
The religions break down as such:
Muslim 50%, Christian 40%, indigenous beliefs 10%
