The segment of Tennesseans describing their ethnic origin as American first — rather than Irish-, German- or African-American, for example — is growing.
It reminds me of a something I read in L.E. Maxwell's book, Born Crucified:
It is said that Emperor William refused request for an audience prepared by a German-American. The Emperor declared that Germans born in Germany but naturalized in America became Americans: "I know Americans; I know Germans; but German-Americans I do not know."
Now if we can just see this realization on a national scale.
