Scooping Loogies for Loot. - Did you know you could make as much a $20,000 in one day by picking up Sperm Whale waste?
Me neither, but apparently it's true and the 'gold rush' is on in the Northland beaches of New Zealand.
Hmm... I guess 'gold' is the wrong color. 'White' is actually more accurate. The waste is ambergris which Sperm Whales spit up.
The problem with any sort of rush to make large sums of money from mother nature usually leads to human fighting and that seems to be the worry of quite a few loogie hunters.
The New Zealand Herald reports:
Dargaville couple Adrienne and Frans Beuse collect ambergris and also act as brokers to companies purchasing the lightweight, pumice-like substance.
The couple said they had received threats from other people desperate for ambergris.
Mrs Beuse claimed that in one incident, the couple's quad bike was forced off the beach by two vehicles, one behind and the other in front, edging them toward the tide.
