Science in action. - There is a really neat article by Keay Davidson for SFGate.com titled, "Air Force pursuing antimatter weapons Program was touted publicly, then came official gag order."
It details how the U.S. has been investigation antimatter use as a weapon and energy source for some time.
Davidson writes about a speech given at NASA by Kenneth Edwards, a director at Eglin Air Force Base here in Florida.
The energy from colliding positrons and antielectrons "is 10 billion times ... that of high explosive," Edwards explained in his March speech. Moreover, 1 gram of antimatter, about 1/25th of an ounce, would equal "23 space shuttle fuel tanks of energy." Thus "positron energy conversion," as he called it, would be a "revolutionary energy source" of interest to those who wage war.
I really suggest this article to those interested in future tech. It's a great read and not just if you're a sci-fi buff. When I got to the last sentence I have to admit to laughing out loud.
