'Tis the Season. - Being a Christian, I always found the Kwanza celebration to be rather hollow spiritually so I never paid it any mind. Now I know why.
La Shawn Barber enlightened me in her posting of an op-ed she wrote in 2002.
La Shawn's post is "Kwanza Is for Pagans" and I highly recommend reading it.
Here's a snippet from her post:
Attention Christians: Kwanzaa is a made-up creed cobbled together by a man hostile to the very God you claim to worship! According to Karenga, Christianity is a myth. He does not believe in the God of the Bible. He says this about Christianity: “Belief in spooks who threaten us if we don’t worship them and demand we turn over our destiny and daily lives must be categorized as spookism and condemned.” He believes that the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, the whole rationale behind Christianity, is a myth.
Having read this yesterday, it was interesting for me to find an article today on WorldNetDaily™ titled, "Black minister: Say 'no' to Kwanzaa."
The WND article raises some of the same points La Shawn raised. For instance, the creator of the holiday, Karenga, brutally tortured two women in the 1970's.
Here's an interesting snippet from the WND article:
In a 1978 interview quoted in the Washington Post, Karenga said, "People think it's African, but it's not. I came up with Kwanzaa because black people in this country wouldn't celebrate it if they knew it was American. Also, I put it around Christmas because I knew that's when a lot of bloods (blacks) would be partying."
The Great Separation continues.
