Please tell me you're joking. - I just read a headline on the Drudge Report that grabbed my attention.
The headline was, "Supreme Court OKs Hallucinogenic Tea..."
The story is an AP story by Gina Holland titled, "Court Allows Church's Hallucinogenic Tea.
The gist is that a church in New Mexico uses a tea that contains a drug named dimethyltryptamine (DMT ).
The federal government confiscated the hallucinogenic tea and tried to prohibit the use of the tea in church ceremonies.
So the whole thing went into the court system and to the US Supreme Court as a First Amendment issue. The court ruled against the federal government apparently because the government did a poor job of presenting the evidence in the case, so they sent it back down to a lower court for more evidence.
On first blush it sounds to me that the court was right in it's ruling. But that's not what concerns me.
What worries me is this (emphasis added):
The tea, which contains an illegal drug known as DMT, is considered sacred to members of O Centro Espirita Beneficiente Uniao do Vegetal, which has a blend of Christian beliefs and South American traditions. Members believe they can understand God only by drinking the tea, which is consumed twice a month at four-hour ceremonies.
What a horribly sad belief! If this church truly believes that they need this drug to hear from God than it's a belief that comes straight from the mouth of Satan! Not at all unlike the lie that snake spun in the Garden of Eden over the forbidden fruit.
A drug is not needed to understand God. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to those who call Him Savior so that we can understand God:
“"I have much more to tell you, but you cannot grasp it now. But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into the whole truth; for He will not speak on His own authority but will tell what is told Him, and will announce to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because He will take the things that belong to me and tell them to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; this is why I have told you, ‘He will take the things that are mine and tell them to you.’” (John 16:12-15 WILLIAMS)
And:
“For God unveiled them to us through His Spirit, for the Spirit by searching discovers everything, even the deepest truths about God.” (1 Corinthians 2:10 WILLIAMS)
I hope the truth can get through to this church body if they indeed believe that a drug is necessary for their communion with God. Because if they do believe such a false doctrine then it is more than likely the god they are communing with is not the True King of kings.
The Great Separation continues.
